Encounter Overview

Zholuga is usually the second boss encountered in Dar Narbugud and can be reached by branching left when you reach the crossroads.  The encounter is reasonably simple to master, however there are a number of deadly elements that can easily wipe an unprepared party.

Equipment & Consumables

The damage during the encounter is almost entirely acid based it is therefor recommended to use at least 3 pieces of the 'tier 1' radiance gear rather than full sets of Dar Narbugud (Tier 2) gear.

The gloom inside Dar Narbugud during boss encounters is 160.  As with all boss encounters it is recommended to fight with 0 gloom so using radiance armour, hope tokens and 'destiny hope' is advised to reach this ballance of gloom and radiance.

There is no requirement to use Scrolls of Lore here to increase damage output and mitigate more incoming damage, however using these scrolls will help both speed up the encounter and take strain off your healers.

Phases Overview

Unlike conventional bosses Zholuga's phases are controlled by the players and can be switch at will up to a limit.

Around the room are a set of Rune Rocks.  At any given time when Zholuga is in a Phase a random Rune Rock will glow with with the same colour as Zholuga's phase.  To move Zholuga to the next phase players must use the Rune Rocks.  However, if the players use the Rune Rocks too many times (12 times in total) they will explode causing a deadly killing field to spawn around the edges of the room.  The killing field is avoidable by moving closer to the centre.  Once the Rune Rocks are destroyed Zholuga will begin to change his own phase at timed intervals.

Zholuga will begin in the Blue phase.  Moved out of Blue he will turn to Green, from Green to Red and finally from Red back to Blue.  There is a short intermitent phase between these phases where Zholuga effectively has no phase and no buffs.

Blue Phase Information

Blue Phase

During this stage a random Rune Rock will light up Blue.  Only a Burglar, Hunter or Lore-Master can use it to progress Zholuga to the next phase.

Periodically during this Phase Zholuga will spawn several fungal spores of the type previously seen from fumaroles defeated to reach him which will debuff the various classes in the raids if they make contact with their target(s).

Green Phase Information

Green Phase

During this stage a random Rune Rock will light up Green.  Only a Captain, Minstrel and Rune-Keeper can use it to progress Zholuga to the next phase.

During this phase Zholuga can inflict a spreading incurable, but easily visible red eye debuff.

When first applied the debuff will root the target.  After 4 seconds the debuff will expire and inflict roughly 1,000 shadow damage to the target.  If any other player is standing close to the affected player when the debuff expires it will spread to them.  This can lead to the debuff going back and forth between players easily wiping entire raids.

Zholuga can also inflict a spreading incurable, but easily visible green eye debuff.  The debuff will inflict 750 acid damage every 2 seconds for 4 seconds.  If any other player is standing close to the affected player when the debuff expires it will spread to them.  This can lead to the debuff going back and forth between players easily wiping entire raids.

Zholuga will also start stacking an acid DoT on his current target.  Initially this does little damage, but allowed to build will quickly out damage the healing output of your raid.

Red Phase Information

Red Phase

During this stage a random Rune Rock will light up Red.  Only a Champion, Guardian and Warden can use it to progress Zholuga to the next phase.

During this phase Zholuga will continually knockback targets within melee range.  This attack will also decrease the threat of anyone affected.  This effect makes Zholuga difficult to tank through threats and in melee.

Loot

  • Greater Elf Stone of Hand
  • 2x Gold Lothlorian Leaves
  • 4x 75k IXP
  • 6x T2 Relics

Alternative Strategy

It is not widely assumed that the method outlined in the video is the correct one.  Mainly because it is simply 'too easy' for a raid boss encounter, especially when compared to the other encounters within Dar Narbugud.  It is likely that you are supposed to use the Rune Rocks more during the encounter rather than just twice, however as this leads to the Rune Rocks exploding, this also seems odd.  As a kinship we are prepared for this fight to receive an update in a future patch.
